Suzie's Sourdough Circus

Suzie's Sourdough Circus

A thousand years ago, people were baking with sourdough. A hundred years ago they still hadn’t stopped. During the Klondike Gold Rush, miners carried their sourdough starters in pouches on their belts or in their backpacks. At night, they kept their sourdough warm in their sleeping bags so they would be able to make tasty flapjacks and bread no matter where they were. Today, with sourdough starter from the Klondike that is over a hundred years old, Kathy Sager is perpetuating the sourdough tradition and introducing it to a whole new generation with her book, Suzie’s Sourdough Circus. Featuring Eliska Liska’s fun and lively illustrations, this book will make kids as excited as yeast in warm water!

In the book, young readers can spend an afternoon in the kitchen with Suzie's bright and playful sourdough circus who cavort, frolic, sing, dance, blow bubbles and get into all kinds of trouble in order to make the bread rise. There is a recipe for the authentic Yukon flapjacks that Kathy’s sourdough starter was used for a hundred years ago, as well as recipes for sourdough bread and chocolate sourdough cake. There are also tips for keeping sourdough starter happy and healthy, so that in another hundred years people will still be carrying on the delicious sourdough tradition.
