APICULTURE, or beekeeping, is carried out in BC by 2,100 registered beekeepers who raise honeybees (Apis mellifera) that pollinate more than $100 million worth of crops annually. As well, in 2005, BC hives produced 1.5 million kgs worth of honey, most of it gathered by 300 commercial apiarists. Other hive products include beeswax, bee pollen, royal jelly and propolis.
