AUSTEN-LEIGH, Joan, a.k.a. Joan Mason Hurley, writer (b 13 Oct 1920, Victoria; d 12 Oct 2001, Victoria). She was the great-great-great niece of Jane Austen, and the literary legacy bequeathed by that ancestor inspired her throughout her life. She was educated at QUEEN MARGARET'S SCHOOL in DUNCAN and in 1939 she married Denis Mason Hurley. The couple operated the Shawnigan Beach Hotel at SHAWNIGAN LAKE for the next 25 years.
