Dixon, George


DIXON, George, fur trader (active 1776–91). He was an armourer on board the Discovery during James COOK's 1778 visit to the Northwest Coast of America. That voyage initiated the maritime FUR TRADE for SEA OTTER pelts and in 1785 Dixon and partners formed the KING GEORGE'S SOUND CO. He commanded the Queen Charlotte, one of 2 vessels that sailed on the company's first expedition and operated during 1786 mainly in Alaskan waters with limited success.
