Empress Line


EMPRESS LINE of ocean-going steamships was owned by the CPR and provided service between BC and the Orient (Japan, China and the Philippines) from 1891 to 1941. The line began as an extension across the Pacific of the transcontinental railway. Service actually began in 1886 using chartered sailing vessels; in 1887 it used 3 charter steamships formerly owned by the Cunard Line, Abyssinia, Parthia and Batavia.
