FANNIN, John, shoemaker, naturalist, first curator of the provincial museum (b 27 July 1837, Kemptville, ON; d 20 June 1904, Victoria). In 1862 he joined the group of OVERLANDERS led by Thomas McMICKING and trekked west across the Plains and the ROCKY MTS to the goldfields of BC (see GOLD RUSH, CARIBOO).
