Gibson, William Wallace


GIBSON, William Wallace, aviation pioneer (b 1876, Dalmellington, Scotland; d Dec 1965, San Francisco). He grew up in Saskatchewan where he became a blacksmith and hardware merchant and indulged an interest in building model airplanes. After going bankrupt in a failed railway construction venture, he arrived in VICTORIA in 1906 and used the proceeds from the sale of a GOLD claim to manufacture the first Canadian-built aircraft.
