Gillis, Duncan


GILLIS, Duncan, athlete (b 28 Dec 1882, Cape Breton, NS; d 1963, Vancouver). He was BC's first Olympic medallist and international sporting star. Gillis arrived in VANCOUVER in 1904 and found a job with the police force. He developed a reputation as an excellent athlete in various events at track (see TRACK AND FIELD) meets throughout the Pacific Northwest, once defeating Native American legend Jim Thorpe in the hammer throw. In 1909 Gillis set a Canadian record for throwing the 16-pound shot....
