GREENPEACE is an environmental group, originally called the Don't Make a Wave Committee, formed in VANCOUVER in 1970 to oppose American nuclear weapons-testing in the Aleutian Islands. The founders were Jim Bohlen and Irving Stowe, 2 expatriate Americans active in the Sierra Club, and Paul Cote, a law student.
