GROUSE CREEK WAR was a conflict over MINING rights on a GOLD-rich creek 5 km south of BARKERVILLE in 1867. Despite an existing claim to the property, a group of promoters called the Canadian Company began mining a strip of land along the creek. When the local gold commissioner swore in special constables to enforce the original claim, the Canadian Co rounded up a small army of miners to resist the police and drive away the rival claimants.
