Jessop, John


JESSOP, John, educator, BC's first superintendent of education (b 29 June 1829, Norwich, England; d 30 Mar 1901, Victoria). He immigrated to Ontario with his parents in 1846. After working as a printer, he became a schoolteacher. In 1859 he joined the OVERLANDERS, who crossed the continent to BC. He failed to make a fortune in the Cariboo goldfields (see GOLD RUSH, CARIBOO) and found work as a printer, first in NEW WESTMINSTER, then in VICTORIA.
