KOYAH, Haida chief (d 21 June 1795). He was a combative leader of the Kunghit HAIDA at NINSTINTS during the early years of the maritime FUR TRADE. His people traded peacefully with George DIXON and Charles DUNCAN in 1787 and 1788, but in 1789 an American captain, John KENDRICK, became angry at the disappearance of some personal items and humiliated Koyah by tying him up, whipping him and cutting his hair.
