Malakwa

MALAKWA, pop 649, is an AGRICULTURAL settlement on the CPR line and the Eagle R, 43 km west of REVELSTOKE. The Eagle Valley, which burrows into the MONASHEE MTS here, is a rich farming district for DAIRY, meat, fruit, vegetable and grain products. Several SAWMILLS, the first established by Sinclair McLean in 1949, have operated over the years. The name is a CHINOOK JARGON word for "mosquito."
