Malcolm Island


MALCOLM ISLAND, 83 sq km, lies at the south end of QUEEN CHARLOTTE STRAIT off the east coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND opposite PORT McNEILL. Petroglyphs and shell MIDDENS are evidence of prior use by the local KWAKWAKA'WAKW First Nations (see ROCK ART). The earliest settlers arrived in 1883. A British temperance society attempted unsuccessfully to establish a commune in 1895.
