Mamit Lake

MAMIT LAKE, originally spelled Mamette, 45 km southwest of KAMLOOPS on Guichon Crk, was the centre of a ranching (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) district settled as early as 1873 by the French Canadian pioneers Joseph and Pierre GUICHON, Louis Quenville and Jean and François Rey. Mamit is an OKANAGAN First Nation word for "whitefish."
