MARTIN, Mungo (Naka'pankam), Kwakwaka'wakw artist (b circa 1881, Fort Rupert; d 16 Aug 1962, Victoria). A member of a noble family, he apprenticed as a carver to his stepfather Charlie JAMES and became one of the best-known carvers on the coast. He played a major role in preserving KWAKWAKA'WAKW (Kwakiutl) artistic traditions during the prohibition of the POTLATCH and bringing Northwest Coast art to wide public attention.
