McNeill, William Henry


McNEILL, William Henry, sea captain (b 1801, Boston, MA; d 1875, Victoria). An experienced trader on the Northwest Coast, he entered the service of the HBC in 1832 when his brig, the Lama, was purchased by the company to supply its coastal posts. Later he commanded the steamer BEAVER. In 1837 he located the harbour on the southern tip of VANCOUVER ISLAND that later became the site of VICTORIA. He became master at FORT RUPERT when it was built in 1849 and was promoted to chief factor in 1857....
