McRAE, Alexander Duncan, soldier, politician (b 17 Nov 1874, Glencoe, ON; d 26 June 1946, Ottawa). He arrived in VANCOUVER in 1907 after making a fortune in land speculation in Saskatchewan. He then invested in lumber and fish canning and became one of the city's leading industrialists. His Shaughnessy mansion, Hycroft, was the scene of an annual costume ball for the social elite.
