NELSON, city, pop 9,258 (2006), overlooks the west arm of KOOTENAY LK 660 km east of VANCOUVER. The townsite was established in 1887 and first named Stanley for the gov gen. It grew quickly as a service centre for the surrounding mines—the Silver King on Toad Mt being the largest—and was the site of a COPPER–lead SMELTER from 1896 to 1907.
