NEWCOMBE, Charles Frederic, psychiatrist, naturalist, field ethnologist (b 1851, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Eng; d 1924, Victoria). Trained as a medical doctor in Scotland, he immigrated to Oregon in 1884, then moved his family north to VICTORIA in 1889 and became BC's first psychiatrist. Most of his time was spent indulging his interests as an amateur naturalist and collector of aboriginal artifacts.
