Ogden, Peter Skene


OGDEN, Peter Skene, fur trader (b 1790, Quebec City; d 27 Sept 1854, Oregon City, OR). He grew up in Montreal where his father was a judge. He joined the NORTH WEST CO in 1810 and served at Ile à la Crosse, SK, where he earned a reputation as a determined, sometimes violent opponent of the HBC. In 1818 the NWC transferred him west of the ROCKY MTS partly to avoid reprisals from the HBC, and he took command at Spokane House (near present-day Spokane, WA).
