POPLAR trees occur in BC in 2 native species. Balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera), or cottonwood, is the largest broad-leaved tree native to BC. It grows province-wide and is distinctive for the fluffy, down-like seeds that fill the air in early summer. The light wood is used for furniture, plywood, boxes and veneer.
