Porcher Island


PORCHER ISLAND, 531 sq km, south of PRINCE RUPERT and southwest of the mouth of the SKEENA R, is the territory of the KITKATLA First Nation, a TSIMSHIAN group who live to the south on Dolphin Island. With the development of Prince Rupert in the early 1900s, many homesteaders arrived. Refuge Bay on the north shore was a steamship port; Hunts Inlet (originally Jap Inlet after the nationality of its first residents) had a school and is still sparsely settled, as are Welcome Harbour and Humpback...
