Province


PROVINCE is one of VANCOUVER's two daily NEWSPAPERS. It was founded in VICTORIA in 1894 as a weekly by Hewitt BOSTOCK, a lawyer-turned-rancher who later teamed up with Walter NICHOL, a future LT GOV. They moved the paper to Vancouver and relaunched it as the Vancouver Daily Province on 26 Mar 1898. Nichol took over the entire operation in 1901, then sold it to the Southam chain in 1923. The Province had the largest circulation in the city until 1949 when, hurt badly by a 41-month printers'...
