Redmond, Fanny Byron (Sister Frances)


REDMOND, Fanny Byron (Sister Frances), nurse (b 1854, England; d 15 Apr 1932, Vancouver). She arrived in Canada in 1877 with her naval officer husband and settled first in Winnipeg. After the couple separated she trained as a nurse at Laval Univ in Quebec City, then came west to VANCOUVER in 1887. In the wake of the great fire (see DISASTERS) she spearheaded the construction of the city's first hospital, St Luke's, on land purchased from the CPR and next door to St James' ANGLICAN CHURCH....
