Rock Creek War


ROCK CREEK WAR, 1860, was a dispute between American miners and British authorities over jurisdiction in the goldfields just north of the American border east of OSOYOOS. After the miners had driven GOLD commissioner Peter O'REILLY out of the area by force, Gov James DOUGLAS visited the camps. He promised to improve road access but warned the miners that if they did not obey British law he would return with troops to enforce it. The miners gave in and the "war" ended peacefully.
