Seghers, Charles John


SEGHERS, Charles John, Roman Catholic bishop of Vancouver Island in 1873–78 and 1885–86 (b 26 Dec 1839, Ghent, Belgium; d 28 Nov 1886, Alaska). In 1863, after studies in Ghent and Louvain, he was ordained a priest; he then left almost immediately for VANCOUVER ISLAND. He served as parish priest in VICTORIA for 10 years and in 1873 succeeded Modeste DEMERS as bishop of the Island.
