Semlin, Charles Augustus


SEMLIN, Charles Augustus, teacher, rancher, politician, premier 15 Aug 1898–27 Feb 1900 (b Oct 1836, Barrie, ON; d 3 Nov 1927, Ashcroft). A schoolteacher in his native Ontario, he was attracted to BC in 1862 by the GOLD RUSH but ended up purchasing a ranch in the CARIBOO. First elected to the legislature as a CONSERVATIVE from YALE in 1871, he was defeated in 1875 but re-elected in 1882; he held the seat for the next 18 years.
