Shorts, Thomas Dolman


SHORTS, Thomas Dolman, steamboat captain (b 1837; d 10 Feb 1921, Hope). He arrived in the OKANAGAN VALLEY in 1883 from the US and was the first settler to pre-empt land on the northwest side of OKANAGAN LK at what is known today as FINTRY. Preferring boating to farming, he began offering passenger and freight service in his rowboat, the Lucy Shorts. In 1886 he launched the first steam-driven vessel on the lake, the 9.7-m screw-propelled Mary Victoria Greenhow, capable of carrying 5 passengers....
