SKYTRAIN, the longest fully automated rapid transit system in the world, is a lightweight rail system operating from downtown VANCOUVER through BURNABY to SURREY. Financed jointly by the provincial and federal governments, the system was announced in 1980 and the first phase, a 22-km line between Vancouver and NEW WESTMINSTER, opened for revenue service in 1986.
