SPENCE, Thomas, miner, contractor (b circa 1826, Dundee, Scotland; d 7 June 1881, Victoria). He went to San Francisco in 1849 during the California gold rush and came to BC in 1858 when news of another gold find reached the outside world (see GOLD RUSH, FRASER R). After a short time prospecting on the FRASER R, he turned his attention to road building and became one of the main contractors for the CARIBOO WAGON ROAD, supervising the construction of 2 long sections.
