Spences Bridge


SPENCES BRIDGE, pop 138, is located 37 km north of LYTTON in the arid southern Interior, where the NICOLA R joins the THOMPSON R. It was originally Cook's Ferry, named for the man who ran a ferry across the Thompson; the name changed in 1865 when Thomas SPENCE built the first bridge. It is in the traditional territory of the NLAKA'PAMUX (Thompson) people. Both the TRANS-CANADA HWY and the CPR mainline pass through the community.
