SUBMARINES were purchased by the provincial government on 4 Aug 1914 just hours before the declaration of WWI. Knowing that war was about to break out and fearing attack by German warships rumoured to be offshore, Premier Richard McBRIDE authorized spending $1,150,000 for the 2 vessels, which had been built in Seattle for the Chilean navy.
