Turner, John Herbert


TURNER, John Herbert, businessman, politician, premier 4 Mar 1895–8 Aug 1898 (b 7 May 1834, Claydon, England; d 9 Dec 1923, Richmond, England). He immigrated to Atlantic Canada in 1856 and settled in Charlottetown, PEI, where he became a successful merchant. He moved to VICTORIA in 1862, where he opened a wholesale business, eventually expanding into SALMON CANNING and insurance and making a substantial fortune. Turner's political career began in 1876 when he won election as a city alderman....
