VANCOUVER 86ERS became VANCOUVER's professional Canadian SOCCER League franchise in 1987, 3 years after the demise of the North American Soccer League and its popular VANCOUVER WHITECAPS team. Tony Waiters, former coach of the Whitecaps, came up with the name "86ers" to commemorate the founding of the team in 1986 and the founding of Vancouver in 1886.
