VANCOUVER CANUCKS HOCKEY team is VANCOUVER's entry in the NHL. The name, derived from Canada's WWII mascot Johnny Canuck, was first used by Vancouver's Pacific Coast League minor-professional hockey franchise from 1945 until the NHL's arrival in 1970. A Vancouver group applied for an NHL franchise in 1966 but was passed over in favour of 6 US cities.
