Vesuvius Bay

VESUVIUS BAY, on SALTSPRING ISLAND, 52 km north of VICTORIA in the GULF ISLANDS, is a small resort community from which BC FERRY CORP runs a ferry to CROFTON on VANCOUVER ISLAND. A group of BLACK families from the US settled in the area in 1859. Estalon Bittancourt opened a store in 1873. The bay was named after a Royal Navy vessel that had no connection whatsoever with the BC coast.
