Wingdam

WINGDAM, 35 km east of QUESNEL on Lightning Crk on the road to BARKERVILLE, was a MINING camp. GOLD was discovered in the area in 1861 and the Wingdam mine operated from 1898 to 1938. Some old ruins could still be seen in the late 1990s. Wingdams, built of logs and rocks, are used to divert streams so that miners can work on the exposed riverbed.
