Campbell Lake

CAMPBELL LAKE and Upper Campbell Lk on north-central VANCOUVER ISLAND are part of the Campbell R system that empties into DISCOVERY PASSAGE at the city of CAMPBELL RIVER. After WWII the BC government chose the Campbell R for a large HYDROELECTRICITY project (see also BC POWER COMMISSION). The John HART Dam near Elk Falls was built in 1947 and 2 more dams followed, on Campbell and Upper Campbell lakes. The dams raised the level of BUTTLE LK, deep in STRATHCONA PROVINCIAL PARK, and they were hotly protested by citizens' groups, led by the writer Roderick HAIG-BROWN and others.
