Using the EBC

Select an article, and it appears in the main display window with the article text displayed in the centre, and an area for links to images and media elements as well as external Web links on the right-hand side.

The left navigation panel includes the following buttons:

EBC Home: Returns to the opening page of the encyclopedia

Subjects: Opens to a selection of subject guides and overview articles for major topics

Index: Links to alphabetical listings of all EBC articles

On the right of the EBC home page you will find:

Search This Book: Enter your search terms here to search the EBC

Each longer article has been divided into sections for easier navigation. A box containing an outline of the article appears just below the article title. Click inside the box or on the down arrow, and the article outline drops down. Click on a section in the outline to go directly to that section in the article.

A play button sometimes appears beside a term or place name in the body of the text. Click on this button to play a sound clip demonstrating the pronunciation of the term or place name. Please note that your browser will require the QuickTime plug-in in order to play the pronunciation sound clips. You can download the plug-in free of charge at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download.

Click on the forward and back arrows to move through the slide show in either direction.
