Vedder/Chilliwack River

VEDDER/CHILLIWACK RIVER flows 100 km from CHILLIWACK LK through the Skagit Range of the CASCADE MTS to join the Sumas R shortly before it merges with the FRASER R west of CHILLIWACK. The upper portion (60 km) is known as the Chilliwack R; the lower portion (40 km) was named the Vedder (after an early Dutch settler) when it was rerouted as part of the Sumas Reclamation Scheme in 1922. The river is popular with SALMON fishers during summer and fall and for its winter STEELHEAD fishing. See also FISHING, SPORT.
