EC15. CRESTED SEA STAR, yellow starfish

Agamemnon Channel, Nelson Island, s. BC

Lophaster furcilliger, Lophaster furcilliger vexator, Sarkaster validus

to 16.4 cm (6.5 in) across

n. Alaska to s. California, Galapagos Islands

subtidal, 12–2,000 m (40–6,600 ft)

The vexator subspecies is the shallow-dwelling one and therefore most likely to be seen by the diver. The tuft-like mini-spines of this star may cause it to adhere to a neoprene scuba suit.
