Baker

BAKER was a ranching (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) and SAWMILLING settlement and a CPR station in the E KOOTENAY, 15 km east of CRANBROOK. Gypsum was quarried nearby. Formerly known as Mayook after a prominent local KTUNAXA (Kutenai) family, the name was changed in 1905 to honour Colonel James BAKER, a local landowner and politician.
