Barkley, Charles William and Frances Hornby (Trevor)


BARKLEY, Charles William, sea captain, trader (b 1759; d 16 May 1832, Hertford, England), and Frances Hornby (Trevor) (b 1769; d 1845). He arrived at NOOTKA SOUND in June 1787 in command of the Imperial Eagle on a trading voyage. With him was his 18-year-old wife Frances, whom he had married the previous autumn. Frances was the first white woman known to have seen the coast of BC. Barkley traded widely with the aboriginals on the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND and during a visit named BARKLEY...
