Begbie, Matthew Baillie


BEGBIE, Matthew Baillie, judge (b 9 May 1819, Cape of Good Hope; d 11 June 1894, Victoria). He was raised on the Isle of Guernsey, then attended Cambridge Univ, where he studied classics and mathematics. He then studied law in London and practised there for several years. When the mainland colony of BC was created in 1858, he won appointment as judge. He arrived in VICTORIA in November of that year and spent the rest of his life in BC.
