Beynon, William


BEYNON, William, TSIMSHIAN ethnographer (b 1888, Victoria; d 1958). Raised in VICTORIA, he was the son of a high-ranking Tsimshian woman and a Welsh steamer captain. He returned to the North Coast, where he inherited a chieftainship from an uncle and became an important authority on Tsimshian culture for most of the anthropologists who visited the coast, including Franz BOAS, Marius BARBEAU and Philip Drucker.
