Birch Island

BIRCH ISLAND, pop 250, is a farming (see AGRICULTURE) and LOGGING community 105 km north of KAMLOOPS and was a station on the CANADIAN NORTHERN RWY. Established about 1917, it was named after an island in the N THOMPSON R. A massive uranium deposit was discovered nearby but in 1978, after some site preparation and much debate had taken place, the development was postponed indefinitely.
