BLADES, Ann, writer, artist (b 16 Nov 1947, Vancouver). After graduating from UBC in 1967 she taught elementary school, then went back to school to qualify as a nurse. At the same time she became a leading author/illustrator of books for children. Her first book, Mary of Mile 18 (1971), is based on her experiences as a teacher in the BC Interior and won the Canadian Library Assoc's Book of the Year for Children Award.
