CURRIE, Arthur William, soldier (b 5 Dec 1875, Strathroy, ON; d 30 Nov 1933, Montreal). He was Canada's greatest military hero, distinguishing himself in WWI by becoming the first Canadian to command the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1917–19. Before the war he had been a teacher in the VICTORIA area (1894–1900) and an insurance salesman and realtor (1900–14).
