Galdikas, Biruté


GALDIKAS, Biruté, anthropologist (b 10 May 1946, Wiesbaden, Germany). Her family was Lithuanian and she was born in occupied Germany after the war. With her parents she came to Canada in 1947, settling first in Toronto, then in Elliot Lake, ON, and VANCOUVER. After a year of studies at UBC she moved to Los Angeles in 1965. She was doing graduate studies in anthropology at UCLA when she met the renowned African anthropologist Louis Leakey, who supported her plans to make a study of orangutans...
